2018 Mw 7.5 Sulawesi Earthquake and Tsunami

The 2018 Mw 7.5 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on September 28, 2018, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The earthquake triggered a tsunami that devastated coastal communities, resulting in at least 4,340 deaths, with thousands more injured or missing.

An initial tsunami investigation team traveled to Indonesia following the Palu Earthquake. The team used the RAPID Facility’s Leica BLK360 Scanner to document a tsunami in and around Palu Bay triggered by the earthquake.

UW Professor Joe Wartman traveled to Indonesia as part of a GEER reconnaissance mission soon after. The team spent time in Palu, Sulawesi, aiming to map and characterize large ground failures using RAPID instrumentation such as UAVs and a Leica GNSS.
