2020 6.4 Mw Croatia Earthquake Sinkholes

The 2020 6.4 Mw Croatia earthquake triggered the formation of numerous sinkholes in the affected region, including the city of Petrinja, damaging infrastructure, and buildings and highlighting the hazards of earthquake-induced sinkholes in areas with karst topography.

After the 6.4-magnitude earthquake in Petrinja, Croatia, on Dec. 29, 2020, nanometrics triaxial seismometers and a Leica RTC360 laser scanner were deployed to study the numerous sinkholes that formed. Field leader Ingrid Tomac, assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego, was remotely trained in instrumentation operation techniques before traveling to Croatia.
