Haines Alaska Landslide
The Haines landslide in Alaska was a catastrophic event in December 2020, causing multiple fatalities, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure and highlighting the risks of landslides in areas prone to heavy rainfall and thawing permafrost due to climate change.
RAPID staff and a team led by Professor Margaret Darrow from the University of Alaska Fairbanks used multiple drones and the miniRanger UAS LIDAR system to investigate the effects of the Dec. 2020 landslide in Haines, AK. The research increases our understanding of snowmelt-induced landslides in cold regions and their changes over time. An extreme weather event that set records for rainfall and rapidly melted 24 inches of snow triggered many landslides in the region.
